Mercedes Benz CLK 230K 120 – 260 Acceleration

April 18th, 2010 by pacapao

The Mercedes-Benz W208 coupes and convertibles were produced from 1997 to 2002. They were sold under the CLK-Class model names. The W208 models were the CLK 200 4-cylinder, CLK230 4-cylinder, CLK 320 V6, CLK 430 V8 and CLK 55 AMG. All models were available in both coupe and cabriolet form. The CLK introduced a new market niche for Mercedes-Benz. Although the W208 used components from the E-Class and had a specification level higher than the E-Class, it was in fact based on the C-Class platform. The CLK features a number of innovative accessories and systems, such as tow-away protection and an emergency transmission mode. The W208 was succeeded by the W209, also called the CLK. The CLK AMG is powered by a hand-assembled 5.5-liter V8 engine. The hardware list reads like that of a race car: super-stiff forged billet steel crankshaft, forged, weight-matched connecting rods and pistons, lightweight AMG-specific camshafts churns inside the pressure-cast aluminum block of this chain-driven single overhead-cam V8 with two intake and one exhaust valves per cylinder, as well as 16 coils and 16 spark plugs (two spark plugs per cy). Its bore and stroke are nearly the same, which makes it an ideally balanced engine. The complex dual-resonance intake manifold with carefully tuned runners helps create an explosive compression ratio of 10.5:1 which is is mostly what delivers the healthy 342 horsepower (255 kW) and 376 lb·ft (510 N·m) of torque. The five-speed automatic transmission is

Don’t Fall Prey to Procrastination – Take Time to Prep For Winter

April 15th, 2010 by pacapao

It’s now officially Fall and it’s time to begin thinking of winter. As the days get shorter — and colder — it’s time to consider preparing for old man winter.

If you’re like most people, you probably put off doing anything unpleasant until the very last minute. That’s how many people consider preventative maintenance on their vehicle.

However, consider this; which is worse? Arranging to take your vehicle into the garage for a Fall maintenance inspection, or standing stranded by the side of the road — in the dark and cold — waiting for a tow truck to collect you?

It’s not really a tough decision is it? Taking your vehicle for a preventative maintenance inspection doesn’t take that long – maybe an hour, and depending on the service provider you use, the inspection doesn’t cost that much either.

There are some simple things you can do yourself to help winterize your vehicle; the simplest of which is to change the washer fluid for your windshield to avoid freezing. Winter washer fluid is specially designed to withstand extremely low temperatures and unlike water – will not freeze in the pipes at 0 degrees Celsius. With shorter days and darker nights, another simple Winterization safety tip includes ensuring your headlights are bright and clear.

When winter hits and the temperature drops, often the first thing to fail is the battery. Canada’s temperatures changes are often considered extreme and this puts a great strain on even the most durable of car batteries. It’s not unusual for a battery to only last a few years and it makes good sense to check your batteries condition each Fall. A professional automotive repair facility can offer such an evaluation.

Although checking your car’s battery is important, there are other critical components to the electrical system that also need to be considered. Simply getting your car battery checked is a good start however a thorough check of the alternator, belts and wiring will provide a more complete picture of your vehicle’s ability to operate and recharge your battery. Your automotive service provider can explain the options to you.

A Fall vehicle inspection includes a “bumper to bumper” safety and maintenance inspection which includes a complete and comprehensive report outlining the various states of your vehicle’s component systems like braking, electrical, suspension and so on.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and a sunny afternoon trip to your preferred automotive service provider where you sit comfortably sipping coffee reading a magazine while your vehicle is serviced is far preferable to shivering by the roadside in the dark waiting for the tow truck. Wouldn’t you agree?

Diagnosing Problems With Your Car’s Air Conditioner

April 11th, 2010 by pacapao

Like your vehicle’s engine and transmission, the A/C is comprised of several components. Each has a specific job to perform in order to cool the cabin of your car. If any single part fails, the entire assembly will either perform intermittently (e.g. alternating cold and warm air), or stop working altogether. The challenge is narrowing down the culprit.

Identifying the root causes of problems you’re experiencing with your air conditioner requires having a basic understanding of its operation. In this article, we’ll take a brief tour through your car’s A/C. I’ll explain the role played by the individual components and describe a few reasons the assembly may be working poorly.

How The Assembly Works

The driving force is the compressor. It pushes pressurized Freon (type R134A) in a gaseous state into another component called the condenser. The condenser turns the gas into liquid form before sending it to the receiver-drier, another component in the system. The receiver-drier is where the liquid Freon is stored. It is also where moisture is removed (moisture can freeze and cause an obstruction in the system).

The refrigerant remains pressurized within the receiver-drier until it is delivered to another component known as the thermostatic expansion valve. This is the point at which pressure is removed from the liquid Freon. It is then sent to the evaporator where it transforms back to a gaseous state.

Inside the evaporator, the chilled Freon absorbs heat from the cabin. At the same time, a blower fan pushed cold air into the cabin, cooling it. The refrigerant, still in gas form and now heated from the absorption process, is circulated back to the A/C’s compressor. There, the cycle stars over.

Exploring Potential Problems

The A/C’s operation is simpler than it seems. Problems that affect its performance, while inconvenient, can usually be uncovered with a little investigative work.

One of the most common culprits is a refrigerant leak; in fact, this is where most mechanics begin looking for a root cause for cooling issues. Leaks can occur in several places, including the seals, hoses, O-rings, and the individual parts (e.g. evaporator and condenser). As you would expect, the older your vehicle is, the more likely leaks will develop due to normal wear and tear.

Assuming there is no seepage of Freon throughout the system, diagnosing problems will depend on whether there is no cool air or just an insufficient amount. If there is no cool air coming from your vents, the issue could be a failing drive belt, compression clutch, or a fuse that has blown. It might also be traced to a malfunctioning thermostatic expansion valve or a blockage somewhere in the system.

If you can feel cool air coming out of the vents, but it’s not cool enough, the problem might be linked to partial blockages, a failing compressor clutch, or even a low charge of Freon. It can also be due to a loose-fitting drive belt that’s failing to adequately power the compressor.

In nearly all cases, problems with your vehicle’s A/C are best left in the hands of an experienced mechanic. Not only is pressurized refrigerant dangerous, but a trained mechanic will have the diagnostic equipment needed to quickly find the culprit.

Jeep Cherokee

April 10th, 2010 by pacapao

The English language is a terribly complex thing, an intricate system of symbols and signs and inferences and nuances. Peculiarity and irregularity are its only consistent features and it is fraught with pitfalls and traps that are all too easy to fall into; yet it is nevertheless governed by a fairly comprehensive set of grammatical rules.  However as native English speakers we have a tendency to pay little attention or sometimes wholly disregard some of the basics. So much so in fact that we’ve had to event new words just to describe our own poor use of other words!

It would appear this has little or in fact nothing to do with the new Jeep Cherokee, and actually, I’ll admit the link is a little tenuous, but please, if you would bear with me for just a little longer I’ll explain fully.

Certain words enter common usage accidentally and incorrectly: I’m sure we’re all familiar with being asked to ‘do the hoovering’, and it’s fairly widely known that the correct way to ask the same question is actually ‘would you mind vacuuming’. Hoover, you see is a brand name, whereas vacuum cleaner is the generic name of the domestic appliance that we all know and loathe (truth be told, I find hoovering – I mean vacuuming – quite therapeutic!). Hoover is not just used as the name for the item though, it has become both noun and a verb (the hoover/to hoover).

We must ask ourselves not just how but also why the word hoover has so successfully and completely established itself in our lexicon, and it’s really quite simple. Hoover pioneered the vacuum cleaner, and its quality and brand image was so strong that it earned inclusion into our daily speech.

I expect by now you’ve guess where I’m going with this…

Jeep, like Hoover, Microchip, Sellotape, Walkman, etc. has long been a Proprietary Eponym (told you we had words about words!) in the UK. Jeep, similar to Land Rover, has established itself as a word and as a brand interchangeable with the terms ‘4×4′ or ‘off-roader’. Jeep is the original off-road and sports-utility vehicle; time and time again the brand sets the highest precedents and causes rivals to scramble to try (and often fail) to imitate it.

One of the latest vehicles to be released by the marque is the Cherokee. I’ll spare you an exhaustive exposition on the origins and implications of the name, suffice to say, the ‘09 Jeep Cherokee maintains the lofty pedigree founded by its forebears.

Last year the Cherokee benefited from a complete redesign and this year’s car has revised a small number of suspension and braking components to better compliment the handling of the vehicle. Not having had the opportunity to drive an ‘08 model, It’s impossible for me to judge how far the latest adjustments have affected the driving experience, but I can tell you that apart from the height of the driving position and wonderful increased visibility that comes with that, on the road the Cherokee behaves very much like a well mannered estate. The 3.7l V6 is gutsy and certainly has the pace to eat up motorway miles with ease. The Jeep comes swathed in up-to-the-minute technology with rain-sensing wipers, satellite radio, a Bluetooth hands free system and the MyGig entertainment centre – complete with 30GB hard drive!

I wonder how long it is before car reviewers spend more time writing about processor speeds and RAM memory than top speeds and engine capacities…
